"Beard-con"
Chapter 20
When I was in a coma… well, I was in a coma. Yeah, I don't know who or what or whatever… so Ali did everything. She still does everything. And I love her for it still.
The world was in the pandemic, which was COVID-19. But, I totally missed all that. It's so frustrating and really just sad that I missed out on the pandemic experience. Or maybe I'm good? Maybe it's so bad that I needed to be in a coma? Who knows - moving forward is the real goal. Not backwards.
May 2020 - Ali got a phone call from a nurse and she goes, “Hello Alexandra - I have something to say…” so Ali said, “oh God, spit it out” because Ali thought I must be dead. I had been in a coma for 2 weeks, and it didn't look like I was going to get better1. Ali was anticipating the worst.
The nurse said, “Well… you know… I could be wrong but… I'm just trying to say…” Now Ali is freaking out and she goes “Stop - spit it out” and the nurse said, “... Can we shave his beard?”
Ali stopped what she was doing and said, “Wait, what?” and the nurse said, “I'm really sorry. I know it’s frustrating but the pastor is not around and the beard is killing me. Can we shave his beard, please?” And Ali, through a sigh of relief, said, “Oh my god, of course! I thought that this is the end".
The nurse said, “Oh my god - I'm so sorry!! I guess I didn't think about that” and Ali laughed and, finally2, so did the nurse. Ali said, “Yeah, no worries, we're good- we are agnostic - Dan just has a beard because it looks good, not anything else” and the nurse said, “Okay, great - thank you so much! It'll grow back in a couple of months” and Ali said, “try 2 weeks”, and then they laughed again.
Ali thought that call was going to be the worst, but it was all about the beard. A month went by and I said, “So, what happened to me?” Ali goes “Don’t worry about it. Now you’re here.” And they shaved my beard again.
It's just really funny. With a pandemic, and whatever. I just want to say to the nurses, thank you - and, Ali, I love you.
Full disclosure: I got way better because now I'm here.
why are all nurses so curt - good or bad - I always love nurses, but there's a lot of people who are NOT a fan of nurses - god bless nurses.
